Special Session on

Dimensionality reduction for machine learning

The Sixth International Conference on Machine Learning and Applications (ICMLA’ 07)

December 13-15, 2007 –  Cincinnati, Ohio, USA

Dimensionality reduction is an important and active research area in machine learning that has received much attention in the past few years. It has been used widely for data visualization and representation, discovering meaningful intrinsic structures, and improving accuracy. Dimensionality reduction has applications in a wide range of areas involving high dimensional data, where discovering low-dimensional structures can help to improve the efficacy of learning. These include face recognition, information retrieval, bioinformatics, biomedical imaging, and natural language processing. The goal of this special session is to bridge the gap between dimensionality reduction theories and applications by bringing together researchers who are developing theories and techniques and those who are applying them. We encourage papers on novel dimensionality reduction algorithms and applications, especially those mentioned above. We would also encourage analyses and comparisons of various dimensionality reduction algorithms for specific applications. Topics include but are not limited to the following:

    • Unsupervised and supervised dimensionality reduction

    • Semi-supervised dimensionality reduction

    • Feature selection and feature ranking

    • Subset selection

    • Evaluation measures

    • Issues with data types and sizes

    • Case studies and applications

    • Comparative studies

    • Emerging challenges

Papers submitted for this special session should be submitted by June 15, 2007, at the regular paper submission website (http://www.cs.csubak.edu/~icmla/icmla07/). Papers should not exceed a maximum of 6 pages (including abstract, body, tables, figures, and references), and should be submitted as a pdf in 2-column IEEE format. Detailed instructions for the authors can be found at the conference website. Accepted papers will be published in the conference proceedings, as a hardcopy. All accepted papers must be presented by one of the authors to be published in the conference proceedings.

If you have any questions do not hesitate to direct your questions to the special session organizer Dr. Jieping Ye (jieping.ye@asu.edu)
